Battle of the Books

We hope your student will join us for another great year of reading and competing in America’s Battle of the Books. This is a free, voluntary reading program for students in grades 3-6 and is so much fun!  All students need to do is register and then start reading the books on their book list. Students who read three books by December are invited to join a team and attend a pizza party in the library. Students then work with their team and continue reading titles on their book list to prepare for the battles in March.

There are 20 books on each grade level list. Students do not have to read every book on the list, however, the more books each person on the team reads the better chance they have when answering questions about the books in a battle. The book lists are available on the library website. The school library has multiple copies of all the books. The books are also available for check out in ebook format on SORA at soraapp.com, our school’s online library.

Deadline to register is Friday, September 22nd!

School Information
Student Pictures in the Hallway for Sale
Many of you have noticed in our main hallway, we have many pictures of students. This has been a great thing to liven up our school and it has given our students a little bit of ownership at Alpine Elementary. We are excited to allow parents to purchase these pictures if you would like. I have tried hard to get all the students in the school in at least one picture, but I know there are a few students that are not represented. I will do a better job next year at this. For this year, these pictures will be for sale for $8/ea. I do realize that some pictures have multiple students in them. Because of this, if your student is in a picture with other students, I will be able to make copies of these and have them before the last day of school. To purchase these, please come into the main office, beginning Tuesday, May 16th. You can pay with check, cash, or credit/debit card. If your student is in the pictures by themselves, you can take the picture then. If they are in a picture with other students, we would like to keep the picture on the wall and give the other students in the picture a chance to order that picture as well. These duplicate pictures will be distributed before the last day of school.

Alpine Race Day

We are excited to let you know of a new item we are doing for the end of the year. This is called, “Alpine Race Day”. This is a fun morning of outside races, with prizes for the winners. Following is a brief description of what is happening that day. We will be having each grade come out separately, beginning at 9:30 to do either one or two races. For grades 1-2, we will be having a short 50 yard dash. Boys will compete against boys and girls with girls. For grades 3-6, we will be having two races. One will be a 50 yard dash, and the other will be a longer, ½ mile (approximately) race. The long race will be one lap around the field. Again, boys compete with boys and girls with girls. We will be having all students participate in these races. Students will be given the option to run, jog, or walk but we will be asking everyone to try their best. Please make sure your students are dressed for this activity with appropriate footwear. Thanks for your support in this.

Summer Office Hours
Beginning in June, our summer office hours will be on Wednesday, from 8:00-12:00pm. If you need to come at a different time, please call and we can make an appoint to meet with you.

School Information

Class Picture day is on Friday, March 10th!
We are excited to announce that we will be having our Spring Class Picture day this Friday. Information will be coming home on Monday regarding this event. So you know, we will be doing the old-time everyone together class pictures on the steps in the gym like we did years ago. These pictures are much more fun than the composites you received in the Fall. Information on purchasing these photos will be in the packet and you will be able to purchase them online. We will not be doing individual student pictures on this day, only full class pictures.

White Ribbon Week!
We want to send a huge “Thanks” to everyone involved in our White Ribbon Week last week. We hope great conversations were had regarding internet safety and online citizenship.

Outside/Inside Weather Days
As a followup to the email sent up earlier, if we have an extremely cold or inclement weather day, we will post red flags on the outside of the school. This will indicate that students should come in the main doors and go down to the gym until the morning bell rings. This will occur if the temperature drops below 20 degrees or if we have major storms.
