We're looking forward to another great week at Highland.

Our Hawk Walk fundraiser is off to a great start and we've almost reached the first prize of a school wide eras dress up day. Order your race kit now so you'll be ready for race day. Remember the Hawk Walk races are on September 19th. Race kits need to be purchased by September 15th. Keep watching to see how the blue line increases as we get closer and closer to taping Mr. Killpack to the wall!!

Our 5th grade students will go to Clear Creek this Friday. This is such a wonderful field trip full of learning, team building, and fun! Thanks to our parents who have helped support this activity and made it possible for them to attend

The Excitement of Hawk Walk is upon us!

We have kicked off the Hawk Walk today at an exhilarating rock themed assembly. Coming home today are letters explaining how students can get race kids and help their "Era" (colored team) rock to the beat of the highest drummer.

Working together the entire student body will try to reach combined fundraiser levels and receive awards such as dress up days, recess games, a fan favorite of "candy from the roof" and a rock party themed lunch. If they make the final goal we will be TAPING Mr. Killpack to a wall at lunchtime. We know you all can't wait to see that!! Of course at the conclusion of the Hawk Walk we'll host a reward assembly where some prizes will be given out and participating teacher and staff will compete in an inflatable costume race.

We hope you'll help us meet our goal this year!

As we get ready to kick off the 2025 Hawk Walk tomorrow, here's a look back at last year's school goal purchase in action. Last year we chose to install two benches in the large back playground, and an additional "buddy bench" was donated to our school. These benches have been not only great places for kids to sit - they have indeed served their intended purpose to allow a place for students looking for a new friend to play with to make connections. We love seeing the kindness of our students as they look out for others and invite others to play or simply share a bench.

We are asking parents/volunteers/visitors to please follow our school dress code when coming to be at the school. Just as with students, we ask that visitors not wear anything distracting or revealing so as not to distract from student learning. We expect adults in the building to be examples to students in following the guidelines given by the district.

These are great reminders of dress code standards for students as well. If shoulder straps are regularly falling down or shorts are requiring frequent adjustment or tugging, they might not be right for wearing to school where we move and play all day.

PLEASE make sure your child is wearing good athletic shoes on their PE specialty day. We ask this to ensure they are able to play the games and move safely.

Some important bus reminders: Be safe in the bus zone and on the bus.
- Don't ask students to go between buses when being picked up or dropped off.
- Be kind to others as we are loading, riding, and unloading the bus.
- Sit correctly in the seat for safety through the whole ride.
- Parents - our buses are very full this year. Please don't ask for groups of students to ride with your child on the bus - there simply isn't room and drivers may not allow them on.
- Check out the Stopfinder app if you haven't already. This app is a great way to not only find your bus stop but get live bus information daily. You will need an invite from transportation for the app, let us know if you need one.

Happy Monday!

We have several restaurant coupons that have been left at the office. One of them is the remainder of the Waffle Love summer reading cards. The others are expiring at the end of the month. If you would be able to use any of them, please pick them up at the office or let us know and we can send them home with a student.

We prioritize keeping our students safe during the school day. To ensure student safety, we are required to confirm and record who is checking a student during the school day. Please be prepared with your photo ID each time you come to check out a student. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding with this expectation.

We are having a fantastic start to the school year!

As we approach our first safety drill tomorrow, we wanted to send out some important school safety information/reminders:

Visitor Check-in Process: Safety is a major priority at our school. We require any parent or patron who enters the school during school hours, to check in at the front office and get a visitor badge.

Emergency Drills - Our district has adopted the standard response protocol. We want to make sure that you are aware of the standard response procedures (SRP) for emergencies. Throughout the school year, we will hold drills that cover all the emergencies. These drills allow us to learn, improve, and be better prepared should a real emergency happen. We know these drills may cause anxiety, fear, questions, and uncertainty, but rest assured, by practicing these drills for emergency situations, if it happens, we will be able to quickly respond in the correct manner to keep all of us safe.

Pedestrian Safety- Please talk to your students that walk or bike to school and to t about the importance of crosswalk safety when walking as well as, when driving. As drivers, please be aware of crosswalks and our students (and others) who may be using them before and after school.

Gates: As a reminder, following new state guidelines for school safety, all gates on the sides and at the back of the school are locked during school hours. They are unlocked to allow students to enter in the morning and leave in the afternoon.

Pick-up/Drop-off: Please be aware of the bus zone. Parents should not be using the bus zone before 7:30 in the morning or until after 2:25 in the afternoon. Help us keep these areas safe by pulling all the way forward, having students enter from the curb, and remaining aware of students in the area.

Thanks for all you do to help us keep all of our students safe.

Safety Response Protocol Images and Information

Dear Parents,

We are so grateful for the incredible teachers, aides, and staff at Highland Elementary! We’re always looking for ways to show them how much they mean to us.

Last year we introduced something new—the Teacher Treat Cart—and it has been a huge hit! Once a month, the cart is rolled out, filled with drinks, snacks, candy, and other goodies as a small way to say “thank you.” The staff not only enjoys it, but they look forward to it every month!

We’d love to invite everyone to join in on donations to spoil our teachers! Attached is a photo of the cart to give you an idea of the kinds of treats we stock. Please feel free to send in any treat you think they'd love, but some favorites include:

  • Drinks (regular & diet sodas, flavored waters, bottled water)

  • Movie-size candy boxes

  • Candy bars & protein bars

  • Hostess/Little Debbie treats

  • Granola bars & trail mix

  • Small bags of chips & popcorn

  • Mini cookies & other baked goods

(Non-perishable items only, please!)

If you’d like to contribute, simply drop off your donation at the front office and let them know it’s for the Teacher Treat Cart.

If you'd like to contribute but it feels tricky with your schedule, please reach out and I'd be happy to help coordinate.

Thank you so much for helping us make our teachers and staff feel as appreciated as they truly are!
