We are so excited to host Alpine Elementary’s Second Annual Chinese Lantern Festival, coming up the week of February 22. This year’s Festival will look a little different, but we have created a fun lineup of activities that we believe all students will enjoy. All students (not just those in Chinese Immersion) should have brought home a flyer last week with details to make the lanterns. Lanterns will be due back to their classrooms by Feb. 19th. The lanterns will be hung the morning of Feb. 22nd and students will take a tour of the lanterns by individual classes.

The Chinese Lantern Festival will kick off with the Chinese Immersion classes performing their Chinese New Year concert, only this time the classes will be recorded and links will be sent out for viewing. The entire week will be filled with fun Chinese New Year activities in individual classes, as well as in our specialty classes.

We are still looking for parent volunteers who would be willing to come to the school Monday, February 22 to help hang lanterns, and also those who would be willing to help take down the lanterns the afternoon of February 24. The Alpine Elementary School Community Council will be meeting in an online meeting February 11, 9:30 – 10:30 am.

We would like to thank everyone who helped us have such a successful PTA membership drive. We feel so blessed to have amazing parents here at Alpine Elementary. We are grateful for your support!

We have two grandsons, first and third grade, who live in Eagle Mountain. Easton and Paxton have been home schooled since the beginning of the school year, but our daughter decided to send them back to Silver Lake Elementary last week. Both boys are above average academically, but our daughter wanted them to have more social interactions, so that’s why she wanted them back in the public school. Paxton, the third grader, had a smooth transition in returning to school. Easton, on the other hand, struggled in his first week of school, telling his mother that “school is stupid, I hate school, I’m smarter than the other kids, the other kids are gross because they eat with their mouths open, and you can’t make me go to school.” Each day was a struggle to get him into the school as he threw tantrums, and on Wednesday, he refused to get out of the car and walk into the school. After pleading with Easton for 30-minutes to go into the school, Darcee finally took him home and told him he was confined to his room until his brother got home from school. Easton stayed in his room all day without complaint, reading books and playing with any toys he had in his bedroom. On Thursday, he made the choice to return to school, explaining to his mother that he didn’t want to go to the school the previous day because he had had a dream and the dream “took me over.” With no dream takeovers, Thursday and Friday were good school days for Easton!

We appreciate all that parents are during this pandemic to provide educational opportunities for their children, whether that be sending your students to school or engaging in online learning at home.

The PTA will be having a meeting this Tuesday, the 2nd at 9:15 in the teacher’s lounge.  We would like to invite anyone that is interested in helping at our school to come. We will be voting on a few things including raising our budget to donate money towards a new digital sign for Alpine Elementary, and voting in our nominating committee. Great news! We have decided to extend our deadline for our membership drive to February 4th. We have had such a great response that we want to give even more people the opportunity to join in our drawing if you haven’t had the chance yet. Alpine Elementary is having a Crumbl Cookie School Fundraiser Thursday Feb. 4th, from 8am-10pm. This will only be at the LEHI TRAVERSE PKWY location. Many of you may be wondering why we have not been putting messages for the past three months on the reader board in front of our school. In October, a vandal or vandals threw a pumpkin through our reader board; consequently, we have not been able to use our existing reader board. Since that time, we have been exploring options of installing an electronic reader board in front of the school. Once we determined we had the money to purchase a reader board, we have been waiting on the City of Alpine to change a sign ordinance that was enacted after Mountainville Academy installed their colored reader board on Main Street. There were complaints about the size and brightness of their new reader board from local residents. But the City of Alpine recently amended their sign ordinance and we are working with a sign company to install a new electronic reader board while following city’s size and hours of operation guidelines. We are probably still two months out before we will have the project completed, but I wanted to give our parents an update.

Do I shake hands or hug someone that I know well at a social gathering during a pandemic? That is the question I have asked myself as Laura and I attended a memorial service (family only) and a wedding reception on the past two Saturdays. Basically, I just let the other person make the first move unless it is one of our children. The perplexities in life that a pandemic creates!

Parents will be hearing from teachers about our upcoming Parent/Teacher Conferences, February 1 – 5. We are encouraging teachers to meet online with parents unless the teacher and parent feel the need to have an in-person conference. Contact your student’s teacher if you have any questions.

We are seeing fewer students bring water bottles to school. Since the beginning of the school year as we follow COVID-19 safety protocols, we have asked students to not use school water fountains, unless absolutely necessary. Instead we would like students to bring water bottles to school and refill them at the water fountain in the fifth-grade hallway that has a bottle refilling mechanism.

Just a reminder that we have started a printer cartridge recycling program at Alpine Elementary. You can bring your old printer cartridges in a plastic bag to the school, deposit them in a box that we have in our staff room, and the school receives money for the recycled cartridges.

And speaking of recycling, our PTA has asked the cardboard recycling company to remove the recycling bins that were placed on the west side of the school. We had ongoing issues with overflowing bins, boxes that were not broken down, and cardboard litter on school property; consequently the bins have been removed so that our custodial crew are not repeatedly cleaning up community, not school, cardboard recycling refuse in the street.

Kindergarten parents should have received an email from the Alpine School District prior to the Holiday Break, informing you that applications are now open for our Chinese Immersion Program. If interested, please submit an application for a student to enter our first grade Chinese Immersion Program for the 2021 – 2022 school year by using the following link. All applications need to be received by January 31. In February, a lottery will be held to fill the 56 student openings that we have available. Every year, we have parents who have other children in the Chinese Immersion Program forget to submit an application. Please submit an application before the deadline at the end of the month.

The Open Enrollment for Preschool begins Wednesday, January 20th, online at 10:00am.  3-year-olds come two days a week, 4-year-olds come 4 days a week.  First come, first served.  Further information can be found on the District website, or you can direct your questions to our Preschool teacher, Kathy Thompson, [email protected].

I hope that your three-day MLK weekend was enjoyable. Two of our daughters took four of our grandsons to Harry Potter World in Florida last week, so Laura and I (let’s be honest, mostly Laura, and a little me) were babysitting three of our youngest grandchildren for four days, while their parents were doing whatever people do in Harry Potter World. I haven’t read the books or seen the movies, so I am guessing there must be a lot of wand waving and magic spells involved in a visit to Harry Potter World. We discovered there is a reason that you parent in your younger years. We love our grandchildren, but we were happy to give them back to their parents on Saturday!

We are starting off the year with a Chinese New Year celebration (Feb 22-26).  Even though the event will be done a little differently this year, we still hope it is a memorable event.  We will need some help from you to make it a success.

We also have White Ribbon Week which will help us refocus on kindness and internet safety (Feb 16-19). We need some volunteers to help plan and implement this.  The plans can be simple.

Though I miss my father and father-in-law, who are both deceased, I am grateful these two military veterans, Korean War and World War II, were not alive to witness what happened in our nation’s capital last week. The Alpine Big 3 Rules that we teach and reteach our students are to be respectful, responsible and ready. I would hope that the leaders and citizens of this great country will better practice those character traits.

Happy New Year!  Hindsight is 20/20, as was the year in our rearview mirror. I can only speak for myself, but I am happy to see the calendar flip over to a new year, and I hope that 2021 enables us to not have “social distancing, quarantine protocols, contact tracing, Zoom meetings, and face masks in school” be a part of our everyday experience and vocabulary.

As we enter a new year, while still dealing with pandemic issues, the staff at Alpine Elementary will continue to make every effort to provide in-person learning opportunities for our students that are following all health and safety protocols, while at the same time giving each and every child an individualized and meaningful learning experience.

Thank you to all the parents who gave me a Christmas gift before the Holiday Break! I made every attempt to personally thank all parents who were kind enough to give me a gift, but I may have missed someone. And for future reference, though all treats, gift cards and gifts are very much appreciated, trusting Alpine Elementary to educate your children, is all I need in the way of holiday giving.

Tuesday, January 5, will be Acadience (formerly DIBELS) Reading Assessments for all K – 3 grade students. Our K – 3 students take the Acadience test three times during the school year, and

Tuesday’s test administration with be the second and middle-of-year reading assessment opportunity. Each K – 3 teacher has a scheduled time to bring students to the library where school district Acadience test administrators will give the reading assessment that measures student proficiency foundational reading skills. The assessment for each student will be brief in duration, lasting no longer that 3-5 minutes, and will give teachers middle-of-the-year feedback on grade level reading benchmarks. 4 – 6 grade students will receive their Acadience Reading Assessment between January 4 – 14 from Alpine Elementary teacher aides.

Alpine School District Nutrition Services has announced that free meals will be provided to all students through the end of the school year.

I have attached the testing schedule for parents who are interested in having their child (grades 3 – 8 in the 2021- 2022 school year) admitted into the Advanced Learning Lab program. Laura and I were able to spend a week, December 20 – 27, with our second daughter, Shayla, and her family, in Redmond, Oregon. We lived in Redmond for 27 years with our five children prior to moving to Utah seven years ago, so Christmas 2020 was spent in familiar surroundings. Having said that, the COVID protocols in Oregon are much more restrictive than here in Utah, so aside from a day hike at Smith Rock State Park, we pretty much stayed in our daughter’s home, enjoying the time with three of our grandchildren and their parents.  A BYU football victory in their December 22 bowl game was a nice early Christmas present, and a capstone to a great football season heavily impacted by COVID-19.

Over the Holiday Break, the governor of Oregon, announced that schools can resume in-person learning in 2021. Our three grandchildren in Redmond will step into a school for the first time in the 2020 – 21 school year in mid-February. I am so grateful that even with all of the COVID-19 logistical issues, our students at Alpine Elementary have had the option of face-to-face learning with teachers since August 18, 2020.

I am confident that the approaching new year will be one where we continue to say, “It is a great day to be an Eagle!”
