As I write this at Alpine Elementary this morning, I can hear the shouts of glee from your children after hearing from you or some other source the two words that brings joy to any child’s heart: Snow day! I hope your children enjoy their day away from school.
I attended BYU when Andy Reid played football for the Cougars, so I was happy to see Coach Reid and his Kansas City Chiefs win the Super Bowl yesterday.
I saw several Alpine Elementary students and parents Saturday night in the Marriott Center at the BYU vs. St. Mary’s basketball game, and what an exciting game it was, as the Cougars prevailed in a heart thumper!
It is our “Welcome to the Jungle” Book Fair week. Don’t forget that Tuesday, February 4 is Grandparent Day. Grandparents or other guests can come to the school and meet students in the library to attend the Book Fair.
If you haven’t signed up for Parent/Teacher Conferences, please do so on Skyward. I have attached instructions on how to sign up. We look forward to having all parents meeting with their student’s teachers.
Before or after your teacher conference you can eat at the Pizza Pie Cafe this week, February 3 – 6, mention Alpine Elementary, and 25% of your purchase will come back to our school!
In our Million Minute Reading Marathon, we have reached 75,074 minutes with only 62 submitting their minutes!! That’s amazing! Just think of how far we can get if we have everyone enter their minutes!! If you were not able to enter your minutes the first week of our reading marathon, you can combine the first two weeks in this entry. Here is the link to enter your minutes. https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSd6eSuA-gUbxL-34syxaH8dUpx9W_E_Efl7wptMpq8AJr_VLQ/viewform?vc=0&c=0&w=1__;!!P-Vt7t5jJSrPd9zQ!_BfdJ1fby9BWjMQ6cB227XC7Ak_gMTE8mvHV_NGifNNQ_wGGDQ7yBZ4arRG0fwpywP1V$ If you would prefer to use a paper copy to enter minutes, your child can get one in the library from Mrs. Ruesch.
There will be a PTA Meeting Thursday, February 6, at 9:15 am in the Staff Room. All are welcome!
Thank you to Bianca Collings and Erin Stanley for helping with all of the Missoula Children’s Theater logistics last week. And a special shout out to the Hamilton family for hosting the MCT directors at your home. We are grateful that over 60 students had the opportunity while performing in “Jack and the Beanstalk” to experience in five short days all that is involved in preparing for and staging a play: memorization of lines and songs, choreography, costumes, makeup, hitting your marks and stage presence. Well done student performers and student production assistants!
Sometimes kids say or write the darndest things. One of our teachers told me that last week she did a 100-days in school (January 27 was our 100th day in school) writing activity in her first-grade class and asked her students to write what they thought they would be doing when they were a 100-years old. One little boy wrote: When I am 100-years old I want to own a Tesla, have a wife and live at home. Isn’t it good to have long-term goals in life?
The online application process for first grade Chinese Immersion is now open and applications will be accepted until February 28. Here is the link:  https://forms.gle/vKuYYrFf5KGrqFWv7

My wife is currently in Southern California with our daughter, son-in-law and their three children for a long-anticipated trip to Disneyland. Today was supposed to be their first day in the “Happiest Place on Earth”, but my wife will be staying in the hotel room with our 6-year-old grandson who started vomiting at 2:00 am this morning. Life never goes as planned, as we saw yesterday with the tragic passing of NBA legend, Kobe Bryant, his daughter, and seven other individuals.
This is Missoula Children’s Theater performance week. The students who will be participating in Jack in the Beanstalk have already been notified and will be rehearsing in our gym after school Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, with a rehearsal at Timberline on Thursday. The students will perform at Timberline Middle School at 7:00 pm on Friday night and 11:00 am on Saturday.
We appreciate all of the parents who attended our Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival celebration on January 23. Special thanks to Suzanne Campbell and other PTA volunteers who helped organize the lantern festival. Our Chinese Immersion program gives Alpine Elementary a culturally rich international learning experience, both for students and parents.
We had a large turnout at our January 22 Parent Informational Meeting for parents interested in applying for admission for first graders into our Chinese Immersion Program. Please remember that the online application will open on February 1 and close on February 28. Parents will be notified by March 13 if their student has been accepted into the program.
Registration for the Alpine Elementary Inclusion Preschool for next year will open January 28 at 10:00 am  alpineschools.org/preschool/.
Hopefully, you have heard from your student about our Million Minute Reading Marathon. The goal is for our students to accumulated a million minutes of reading time. We need every parent to enter each student’s weekly reading minutes. The link provided is four simple questions. Please determine with you student(s) how many personal minutes read, listen to, or on any reading apps. Fill out the form for each student.  Also determine how many minutes your family read and listened to and enter them only one time per week. You will want to divide among siblings the family minutes. If you would like a paper tracker they will be in the library. Thank you we know this might take a few minutes of your time to add up minutes and enter minutes, but it will be amazing when meet our goal of 1 million minutes!

On a recent bike ride up the Provo Canyon, I quickly learned that that clip-in bike shoes are designed for one purpose only, and are not functional when walking on snow or ice. Because I have made the mistake in the past of trying to ride my road bike over small patches of ice, with less than positive consequences, I dismounted and was walking my bike across some icy snow up near Bridal Veil Falls. My clip-in bike shoes slipped on the ice causing me to topple to the ground with my bike, and one of the pedals lodged into my side just below my ribcage as I fell to the ground. The pain I’ve been dealing with in recent days is a natural consequence of not being smart enough to simply turn around when encountering ice on a winter bike ride.
Best of luck to our K – 3 grade students as they take the Acadience (formerly known as DIBELS) middle-of-the-year assessment on Tuesday.
There will be an informational meeting on Wednesday, 6:00 pm in our library for all parents interested in making application to our first grade Chinese Immersion Program for the 2020 – 2021 school year. You do not need to attend this meeting to apply for admission into our Dual Language Immersion program. Online applications will be accepted beginning February 1 on the Alpine School District DLI website. Applications will be accepted through the month of February and parents will be notified by March 13 if their student has been accepted into the program.
Registration for the Alpine Elementary Inclusion Preschool for next year will open January 28 at 10:00 am  alpineschools.org/preschool/.

In December, our 3rd – 6th grade Chinese Immersion classes took the Chinese Assessment of Performance toward Proficiency in Languages (AAPPL). I have attached the past three years of AAPPL results. Be sure to scroll down to see the results in the speaking, reading, listening and writing portions of the assessment. You will be able to see that our Chinese Immersion students compare quite favorably with the other Chinese Immersion students in the Alpine School District. Congratulations to all of our 1st – 6th Chinese teachers and our Immersion students for the outstanding assessment results!

I assume many of you, like me, woke up on Sunday with snow that needed to be removed from driveways and sidewalks. Though I shovel or snowblow most of the snow at our house, my sweet wife is always the first to shovel snow from the handicapped access sidewalk and home entry for a wheelchair bound couple that live across the street. For forty years, I have never had to look very far to see and feel what selfless service looks and feels like.
The Alpine Elementary School Community Council will be meeting 9:30 – 10:30 am, Thursday, January 16 in our Conference Room. All parents are welcome to attend. The agenda is attached.

Happy New Year and welcome to 2020! It is going to be a great year for Alpine Elementary and our students! I hope that you all have had a terrific start to a new decade and a new year. Thank you so much for all of the generous gifts that came my way prior to the holiday break! All of the sweets and other gifts were very much appreciated by my family during our holiday gathering.
Laura and I were fortunate to have all five of our children, their spouses, 13 grandchildren and Zoe, a 70-pound Goldendoodle, in our home for a week. It is amazing how much food that many people can consume, not to mention the amount of garbage produced, and the general messiness and upheaval in the household, a fact that an individual (me) with some OCD tendencies has to learn to live with while smiling and enjoying the associated family chaos. There was lots of laughter, some tears, but mostly an abiding gratefulness and appreciation for the love of family.
The Alpine Elementary Chinese New Year Celebration will be on January 23rd from 5:45-7:30 p.m. It will be a fun, cultural event for ALL families, not just those with students in the Immersion program.
We’re so excited to be partnering with Missoula Children’s Theatre for a fifth year! This year’s musical is Jack and the Beanstalk. Rehearsals will be happening Jan. 27th – Jan. 31st, with performances on January 31st and February 1st. If your child would like to participate, fill out this form.

My wife Laura and I have enjoyed the multiple entertainment options available to us since moving to the Utah Valley six years ago. On Friday night, we had the opportunity to watch the highly entertaining “Seussical” at the Hale Centre Theater. In Redmond, Oregon where we lived for 27 years and raised our family, the big event of the year was the Deschutes County Fair in August,  a fun family experience, but the DCF certainly pales in comparison to all the entertainment choices we have here,  although I was disappointed that there were no deep fried Elephant Ears, a Deschutes County Fair favorite, at the Hale Centre Theater.
Our Christmas Sing will begin at 1:15 pm on Wednesday, December 18. Each grade level, starting with our preschoolers and ending with our sixth graders, will sing two songs, and then return to class. We are grateful for the time and effort that our music teacher, Melinda Hunt, has put forth to prepare our students for the Christmas Sing.
Last week, directed by Mrs. Hunt, the Alpine Eagle Choir performed three times. The talent that the students at Alpine Elementary have never ceases to amaze me. All of the choir performances, including performing at the historical venue at Assembly Hall on Temple Square, were outstanding. Thank you Alpine Eagle Choir and Mrs. Hunt!
Our third graders will have the opportunity on Wednesday morning to work with students from Timberline Middle School and build some wooden toy cars. And on Thursday, our 6th graders will be taking a field trip to the Aquarium.
Friday, December 20 will be a Minimal Day, and students will be dismissed from school at 12:35 pm.
At the end of this week everything that is currently in the Lost and Found will be bagged up and put into storage. Please take the opportunity to come to the school and see if your child has any items in our Lost and Found.
Mrs. Faux’s class won November contest… We really need to give them a run for their money! So treats were bought for a second place winner and that is Mrs. Johnson’s class! Thanks to Sun Haven tanning located in Pleasant Grove For generously sponsoring November’s contest!
We also had a really slow month but every dollar counts! We collected $33.90 For November!
Do Nut forget to clip those box tops!  Please turn in box tops by December 19th at 230pm as that is when they will be collected.  Treats are generously being donated again this year by Daylight Donuts in Alpine.  YUM!   Check out their online store for fun products, too:  https://www.shop.daylightdonuts.com/main.sc

You all received my phone message last week that our Music Teacher/Choir Director, Melinda Hunt, needed to have an emergency appendectomy requiring us to cancel Friday’s performance at the Festival of Trees. I am happy to report that Mrs. Hunt is home, and though still sore from the surgery, she plans on directing the choir tonight at Assembly Hall in Salt Lake City, and leading all of our students in their upcoming holiday programs. Our staff has had more than its share of unexpected heath issues this school year. We are hoping that 2020 brings improved health for the Alpine Elementary staff.
The next two weeks will be full of holiday activities for your children, and teachers should be communicating with you about in-class activities and special events. Here are some events you might want to mark on your calendar:
December 9—5th/6th grade Battle of the Books pizza party, 12:30 pm in library
December 9—Alpine Elementary Choir Performance at Assembly Hall in SLC, 5:30 am
December 10—Choir performs for students and staff in assembly, 2:15 pm in gym
December 11—Choir performs for parents, 7:00 pm in gym
December 12—5th graders go to Junior Achievement Biz Town in SLC, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
December 12—School Community Council Meeting, 9:30 am in Conference Room, any parent can attend (Agenda attached)
December 13—2nd grade Traditions Fair (teachers will communicate times)
December 16—3rd/4th grade Battle of the Books pizza party, 12:00 pm in library
December 18—3rd graders make toy cars with Timberline students, 9:00 – 11:00 am in gym
December 18—Pre-School – 6th grade parent Holiday Assembly, 1:15 pm in gym
December 19—6th grade field trip to Aquarium
December 20—Minimal Day, student dismissal at 12:35 pm
On the second Monday of every month our school has the opportunity to earn money when families eat at the Chick Fil-A in Lehi. So tonight, 5:00 – 8:00 pm, for all of you non-choir families, 20% of your Chick-Fil-A purchase will come back to Alpine Elementary.
For those of you who are interested in making application to the first grade Chinese Immersion program for the 2020 – 2021 school year, there will be an informational meeting at 6:00 pm in our library on January 22. Attendance is not required to make application to the program, but we will be able to answer any questions you might have about Chinese Immersion.

I was a bit under the weather for 36-hours with some sort of flu bug, but I am back in the saddle today. I could blame my illness for non-participation in Cyber Monday, but even if I had been 100% healthy, cyber shopping is just not in my wheel house, though I do make a few online purchases throughout the year. Curse of being a Baby Boomer I guess. Old habits die hard.
I hope you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving Holiday with family and friends! Can you believe it is December and we will soon be turning the calendar on a new year?
Thanks again for your generous donations to our annual Candlelight School Coin Drive. The $10,410 we raised will buy a lot of beans and rice for the students in Nairobi. What a wonderful tradition and important part of the Alpine Elementary culture is our annual coin drive! Alice Afwai, Co-Director at the Candlelight School, sent the Alpine Elementary Community this message:
To the principal, parents children and all staff of Alpine elementary school. I take this opportunity to thank you for the love that you have shown to our children in Kenya candle light school. I lack words to express my joy for denial and sacrifice that you have saved your salary, savings and every dollar that you gave to feed the children at candlelight school. A child can afford a meal and smile in the class because of you. You have made a huge difference in the life of a child at candlelight school. We as candlelight family we are very grateful for our sister school Alpine elementary. Thank you very much for the love that you have shown through giving. The money will go for feeding the children. Thank you again to mr principal Perdue, teachers, cooks, children parents and all other staff of Alpine elementary school. Yours Alice
The Alpine Eagle Elementary Choir performs on Friday, December 6 at the Festival of Trees at the Mountain America Exposition Center in Sandy. The choir will leave the school at 9:15 am, perform at 12:15 pm and return to the school at 2:00 pm. Good luck Mrs. Hunt and choir members!
I have attached information about Battle of the Book Pizza parties, the December PTA newsletter and Advanced Learning Lab testing dates.
Have a. great week, and as always, remember that it is a great day to be an Eagle!

Later this week most of us will gather with family and friends to eat a delicious meal and reflect on all that we are thankful for. And though I daily give thanks for all that I have been blessed with, this holiday season helps me to reflect on all that brings joy and meaning into my life: a faith that serves as my anchor and lodestar, a beautiful wife who is my best friend, five adult children and their spouses who are happy and healthy, 13 grandchildren, good health, and the opportunity to work at Alpine Elementary with a dedicated staff, kind and motivated students and supportive parents.
Our annual Candlelight School Coin Drive brings into clearer focus all that makes the Alpine Elementary Community so special, and for that reality, I am very grateful! In five days, we raised at least $10,410! I say “at least” because there is still money to be counted. Check out the past four-year Coin Drive contribution totals:
            2016 – 17      $7,500
            2017 – 18      $8,245
            2018 – 19      $9,170
            2019 – 20      $10,410
And once again, our Nutrition Services ladies, Whitney Wilson, Shirleen Jenks, Gina Lye and Tina Gast, modeled what it means to dig deep and generously give to a worthy cause. These ladies don’t give to be recognized, and I won’t embarrass them by giving you the total amount, but I will simply say these ladies gave a significant portion of the total amount contributed. Every year, Whitney Wilson tells me the Coin Drive Week is their favorite week of the year. Our Nutrition Services staff truly walk the talk!
I heard multiple Coin Drive stories that warm my heart and make me grateful for the students that attend our school. Kindergarten teacher, Colleen Aitchison, shares the following:
The kids were putting their coins in the can and I had one student bring 3 baggies full of coins and dollars. I said “Wow you sure brought a lot of coins today.” He told me that he brought all of his lemonade stand money from the summer so that the kids in Africa could have lunch.
And on a post-it note in one of the coin cans, a little girl wrote:
Im giving all the Qurters In my bangk because it fells like the rite thing to do.
From the mouth of babes! I thank all of the Alpine Elementary Community for their generosity and for doing the right thing last week!
The month is almost over, so keep clipping those Box Tops for our November contest deadline, which is November 27th.  Treats are being generously donated by Sun Haven Tanning and Salon located at 238 E. State St. in Pleasant Grove, Utah.  Check out their website: sunhaventan.us!  They have been voted #1 tanning salon in Utah for 3 years!  And they offer more than just tanning, they offer microblading, eyelash extensions and waxing services, also.  Just text the word “Start” to (801) 285-9210 and you will get a free tan!  Thanks, Sun Haven!
