Reflections-See below for details
I would just like to encourage you to help your students with a Reflection entry. Hopefully, you have all noticed a reduction in the homework for your students. One benefit that can be had with this homework policy is that you might have a bit more time to do things like a Reflection entry. I know life is busy but the Reflections program is something that your children remember for years to come. Please remember that entries are due by October 13th.

Red Ribbon Week Coming Up
We have our annual Red Ribbon Week coming up Oct 18-21. I had some parents ask to have a “heads-up” on when the dress up days will be. So, there will be more information coming but we wanted to let you know that on Tuesday of that week it will be hat day, Wednesday will be crazy hair day, Thursday will be sports jersey day, and Friday will be wear red or camo day. Hope that helps those who wanted to know early.

Battle of the Books Information
If you ordered a Battle of the Books t-shirt for your student, please pay the $7/shirt cost as soon as possible on myschoolfees.com. Thanks to those who have already paid 🙂 Payment deadline is October 21st.

We’re so excited for the Battle of the Books competition this year and have more students participating than ever before! It’s going to be a great year of reading!

Students who have read at least three books on their reading list by December will be invited to a pizza party in the library. Thanks for encouraging your students to read every day. We want to order A LOT of pizza for our readers 🙂

Running Club
Running Club is continuing this week!  It will take place during Monday and Friday morning recess and Wednesday afternoon recess.  Remember to wear tennis shoes for those kids wanting to participate.  Prizes will be given out to the kids who reach their running milestones.

Reflections

Reflections is a national PTA program and it gives students the chance to submit art in one or all of the available arts categories: Dance Choreography, Film Production, Literature, Music Composition, Photography, and Visual Arts.  The theme for this year is Show your Voice!  Submissions need to be sent electronically here: https://www.utahpta.org/ref (this is also where instructions and rules are found) by October 13th.

PTA Meeting

Our next PTA meeting is Oct 25th from 9:30-10:30 AM in the teacher’s lounge.  We would love to have you there!

At this meeting, we will be voting on our new PTA bylaws.  The proposed bylaws are posted in the teacher’s lounge.  If you have any concerns or issues with the bylaws, please email [email protected].

Fall Festival and Fun Run
We would like to thank our PTA for the fantastic week we had last week. They put in hundreds of hours planning and carrying out these events. We are overwhelmed with the generosity of our Alpine Elementary parents and community! Thank you so much for all of those who donated to our fundraiser and those who bought our Fall Festival baskets.  You are all amazing!!  We brought in a final total of $18,918.96!!  That exceeded our PTA Fun Run Fundraiser goal of $15k.  The winners of the Chick-Fil-A lunches for each grade are:

  • Kindergarten – Ms. Malone’s AM class

  • 1st Grade – Ms. Johnson’s class

  • 2nd Grade – Ms. Clement’s class

  • 3rd Grade – Ms. Chen’s class

  • 4th Grade – Ms. Dale’s class

  • 6th Grade – Ms. Reyes’ class

We want to send a special thank you to Doterra for donating to make our T-shirts happen!  All of the students and faculty looked awesome in the shirts during the Fun Run!!  The lunches for the winning classes will happen soon!

Also, thank you to all the volunteers who made last week possible!  Everyone had a great time at the Fun Run and the Fall Festival!  We appreciate all that you do!

Alpine Choir
This is the last week to sign up for the school choir. Practices are on Tuesday’s from 3:30-4:30. It is a great opportunity for our students to be with their peers and learn some great songs. The cost is $30 and can be paid on myschoolfees. Please let us know if you need any more information.

Alpine Elementary PTA Fundraiser & Fun Run

Fun Run PTA Fundraiser
This week, we are excited to host this year’s Fun Run PTA Fundraiser! Last week, your student should have come home with a flyer with information surrounding this week’s Fun Run PTA Fundraiser, including details around the Fun Run itself happening THIS FRIDAY, September 30th, from 12:00 pm – 3:15 PM at Creekside Park. I have attached the full flyer with all the details, but just a few things to keep in mind:

Goal: Our fundraiser goal is $15,000. Your generous contributions this week directly enable several programs that would not be possible otherwise, which in turn support 4 fundamental goals for Alpine Elementary, including:

  • Creating opportunities to strengthen school unity

  • Promoting health & wellness

  • Encouraging attitudes of acceptance, kindness, & respect

  • Creating a culture that learning is exciting & fun

Our many PTA programs taking place throughout the school year, including Running Club, Kindness Club, Walk-to-School Wednesdays, the Chinese Lantern Festival, Red Ribbon Week (drug safety & awareness), White Ribbon Week (Internet safety), Battle of the Books, Fall Festival, Family Fun Nights, and the School Spring Carnival are some of the many programs your donations make possible!

Fun Run Schedule at Creekside Park on Friday, September 30: Come support your students as they participate in the Fun Run! Thanks to the generous contributions of Doterra, all Alpine Elementary students will be getting an Alpine Elementary t-shirt for the run! Below is when each class will be running at the park.  They will run for 15 minutes, grab a snack and then head back to class.

  • First Grade – 12:45 PM

  • Kindergarten & Second Grade – 1:15 PM

  • Third Grade – 1:45 PM

  • Fourth Grades – 2:15 PM

  • Fifth Grade – 2:45 PM

  • Sixth Grade – Noon

Fall Festival

Come join us at the Fall Festival this Friday, September 30th 4-7 PM after the Fun Run!  We will have carnival games, a petting zoo, inflatables, prizes and food!  $6 wristband for carnival games. This is such a fun activity for the entire family to enjoy! Please note, there will be a small percentage charge added on to the cost if you are paying by credit card.

Reflections is an incredible nation-wide program put on by the PTA that encourages children to be creative and involved in the arts. There is no fee to participate and there are several art categories. SEP Conferences Coming Up

We are excited to have our first Parent/Teacher conferences of this year. Please log on to your Parent Skyward page to access the calendar to sign up. We encourage everyone to please come and get an update on how your student(s) are doing in school. This is a fantastic time for parents and teachers to connect and answer any questions you may have. I have attached a short tutorial on how to sign up if you are unfamiliar with this process. Please let us know if you need assistance with this process. If you do not sign up, a time will be assigned to you.

Five12 Foundation Opportunity

We are very fortunate to have the chance to access the Five12 foundation and all they do for the students across the state. This organization is based here in Alpine and is one of the best operations run by some of the best people I know. This foundation provides much needed food and assistance to students who may need a bit of extra help at times. At Alpine Elementary, many students have been given weekend meals. These are distributed on Friday afternoons as students are leaving for the weekend. It is a process that is discrete and allows students to take home a bit of extra food as needed. Please let me know if you would like to be included on this list or if you have friends or neighbors who could possibly benefit from this fantastic program. Alpine Elementary PTA Fundraiser & Fun Run

Pandemic Resurgence
There has been a recent resurgence in the number of students and adults who are contracting the COVID-19 virus or the Omicron variant. Alpine Elementary follows all state and local pandemic prevention guidelines. The Alpine School District works closely with the Utah County Health Department to determine how to ensure a safe learning environment for students and safe working conditions for faculty. There are currently no changes in Alpine Elementary safety protocols, but you will be informed if more rigorous protocols are deemed necessary by the State of Utah, the Utah County Health Department and the ASD.
Crossing Guard
We are in need of a new crossing guard before and after school. Our crossing guard is employed by the Lone Peak Police Department. If you are interested in applying for the job, here is the link. Direct any questions to Jessica Scholle at the Lone Peak Police Department. The job pays $13.25 an hour.
PTA News
Spirit Night Thursday, January 13th at FIIZ – This Thursday, ALL DAY, stop by FIIZ in Highland for a drink! FIIZ will donate 10% of the entire day’s total to our PTA! So tell your friends/family to stop by FIIZ in Highland this Thursday!
First Grade Chinese Immersion Application
Kindergarten parents interested in applying to the first grade Chinese Immersion Program can go to the Alpine Elementary website and find both the application and an orientation video that replaces the orientation meeting we have had in previous years. Applications are due January 31.

Outside the Principal’s Office
It is basketball season in our family. Three grandsons, ages 8 – 14, had games on Saturday, and then Laura and I completed the day by going to the Marriott Center and watching the BYU men’s basketball team prevail over St. Mary’s. And the sunny though cold weather permitted a morning bike ride.
Speaking of basketball, did you see the video that went viral over the Holiday Break?
Kathleen Fitzpatrick, otherwise known as Ms. Fitz, decided to make a deal with her third-grade class at Holy Trinity School in Washington D.C. The deal was if she made a full-court shot on the school’s basketball court, she would reward the class with a hot chocolate party. Receiving the ball from a student in a lion costume and hitting a half-court shot, followed by the reaction of Ms. Fitz’s students. Is there anything better than spontaneous student joy?

Candlelight Coin Drive Week
It is Candlelight School Coin Drive Week! This will be Alpine Elementary’s 11th year helping provide meals for children at our sister school in Nairobi, Kenya. More than 650 students attend Candlelight School, and nearly all of them are orphans or children living on the streets. They receive their only meal of the day at school. Our Coin Drive donations directly fund their lunch program for the year. See the attachments to learn more about the Candlelight School.

Veterans Day Celebration
I hope your students came home and told you about the very touching and powerful Veterans Day celebration we had on November 11. Thank you to librarian, Paula Ruesch, and Assistant Librarian, Janece Thompson, for suggesting a Veterans Day ceremony that included members of Mrs. Thompson’s bagpipe band! What a powerful and touching way to remember Veterans both present and past. It was an honor to have one of our parents, Paul Blackham, a military helicopter pilot, join our parade. And Student Council officers, Daniel Snow and Max Bergquist, did a great job of carrying our country’s flag! As I walked behind the flag, the bagpipe band, and Mr. Blackham, I saw several adults with tears in their eyes, touched by the bagpipe tribute to Veterans. Not going to lie, I cried through the entire parade!

  • Spirit Night this Friday to Support Candlelight School – This Friday, Nov. 16, (all day!) stop into Yummy Ice Cream Emporium in Highland as another way to support the Candlelight School. 25% of proceeds will go directly to the Candlelight School Coin Drive. Plus you get delicious ice cream, so it’s a win-win right there!
  • Junior Achievement Helpers – The PTA is looking for volunteers to help organize the Junior Achievement program at Alpine. Junior Achievement is a global nonprofit with a mission to help develop business, financial, and entrepreneurial skills to elementary-age children. The opportunity to interact in your child’s class is fun and educational while allowing for flexibility for volunteers in scheduling and presentation.   • Reflections Awards Lunch – On November 15 at 11:40 am, there will be an Awards Lunch in the library for all the students who participated in Reflections.

A third consecutive beautiful fall weekend!  Friday night, Laura and I watched LPHS beat Skyridge in a 6A semifinal football game at Rice-Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus. Several Lone Peak players are former Alpine Elementary students. So fun to see those boys earn their way into a state championship game on Friday afternoon against Corner Canyon!
A bike ride, yard work and going to two grandsons’ basketball games filled my Saturday. I hope you all were able to get outside and enjoy the beauties of this wonderful place that we call home!

Veterans Day, November 11
We are grateful to veterans, both current and past, for their service to our country. My father is a Korean War veteran and father-in-law a World War 2 veteran. And though they both have passed on, it is a privilege each year to honor them and all veterans.

  • Skate Night this Tuesday – Join our school this Tuesday night, November 9, 4:30 to 9:00 pm at Classic Skate in Orem for a skate night! Admission is free! (Skate rentals not included.)
  • Spirit Night – Anytime on November 16 at Yummy Ice Cream Emporium in Highland! 25% of that day’s proceeds will go to our school! If you haven’t been to Yummy yet, it serves delicious ice cream and is such a fun new ice cream parlor!
  • Junior Achievement Helpers – The PTA is looking for volunteers to help organize the Junior Achievement program at Alpine. Junior Achievement is a global nonprofit with a mission to help develop business, financial, and entrepreneurial skills to elementary-age children. The opportunity to interact in your child’s class is fun and educational while allowing for flexibility for volunteers in scheduling and presentation.   • Reflections Awards Lunch – On November 15 at 11:40 am, there will be an Awards Lunch in the library for all the students who participated in Reflections.
Coin Drive November 15 – 19
Next week, November 15 – 19, we are excited to participate in our annual Candlelight School Coin Drive! This year will be Alpine Elementary’s 11th year helping provide meals for children at our sister school in Nairobi, Kenya. More than 650 students attend Candlelight School, and nearly all of them are orphans or children living on the streets. They receive their only meal of the day at school. Our Coin Drive donations directly fund their lunch program for the year. See the attachments to learn more about the Candlelight School.

We had another gorgeous Fall weekend! It was the opportune time to rake leaves. I don’t know about you, but I experience a great feeling of accomplishment when I spend several hours raking leaves and seeing the lush green grass as the aftermath. However, autumn leaves continue to fall from trees, so there is more work to do next weekend. A metaphor for life? The events in our lives never remain neat and orderly. There is always more work to do!
I enjoyed a beautiful bike ride up to South Fork on Saturday morning. A magnificent fall day with several wild turkeys, feeding in nearby fields, checking me out as I pedaled away!

We were hit hard by the COVID-19 virus last week, as we needed to quarantine our 4th and 5th grade Chinese classes because a teacher in each of those grade levels tested positive for the virus. And over the weekend, we needed to call parents of students in our Resource Classroom to inform them that their children will need to quarantine until after the Thanksgiving Break because a teacher’s aide has tested positive. Consequently, we currently have over a hundred students that are quarantined as a result of being in close contact with a teacher or aide who tested positive for the virus.
We currently have six staff members and three students, for a total of nine, who have tested positive for the virus and are on the Current Positive Virus List. Individuals come off this list when they finish their self-isolation period, so the Current Positive Virus List is always fluid. We will drop from nine to six individuals this week, assuming that we don’t have anyone who tests positive this week. If we were to reach a total of 15 people on the list, the Alpine School District would consider a modified schedule at our school. If you have a child who has tested positive for the virus, and is being kept home for self-isolation, please let us know here at the school. Only current active cases.
Last week’s spike in positive COVID—19 cases throughout the state of Utah has also impacted students and staff at Alpine Elementary.
Please remember to keep your students home if they are displaying any COVID-19 symptoms:
  • Fever or chills
  • Cough
  • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing
  • Fatigue
  • Muscle or body aches
  • Headache
  • New loss of taste or smell
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Diarrhea
Because of the number of students that are currently quarantined, we are postponing the Candlelight School Coin Drive to November 30 – December 4. We sent out an updated Coin Drive flyer last week.

Sometimes a principal has a week where it seems like he is in the middle of a never-ending sequence of events that are negatively impacting students, parents and staff. Because of COVID-19, last week was one of those weeks for me. But in the darkness of storm clouds a bright light shone through. On November 12, our 14th grandchild was born in American Fork Hospital. Little Mace Tyler Perdue has helped me to remember and refocus on what is most meaningful in life.

UPDATE:
Here is an update with some good news. As I’ve worked with district officials and the Utah County Health Department to verify the COVID cases, our numbers are lower by a few cases than was reported in earlier in the Eagle News. Some cases that have been reported to us have not been verified. We have been moved on the ASD Return to Learn Dashboard from green to yellow. I will continue to work closely with our nurse, the Utah County Health Department, and district officials when it comes to reporting cases. You are able to check the district dashboard, and it is updated daily.
Thank you for doing your part to help slow the spread of the virus. Remember to please keep your child home if they show any symptoms.
I apologize if my message in the Eagle News earlier today caused any alarm or anxiety. Our primary objective as we deal with COVID-19 is to ensure the health and safety of all members of the Alpine Elementary Community.

The unseasonably rainy weather cooperated for long enough on Memorial Day that Laura and I were able to hike up to Pine Hollow Meadow from the Pine Hollow Trailhead in American Fork Canyon. A bit muddy and snowy in portions of the hike, but enjoyable nonetheless. Can you believe that some of the Utah ski mountains are still open as we enter the month of June? Indeed, it has been a wet winter and spring, which bodes well for local farmers and those who travel to area reservoirs in the summer for recreational opportunities.
Only three days of school left. Hard to believe! As we conclude our school year, I want thank the entire Alpine Elementary Community for all you have done to make the 2018 – 2019 year an excellent one. Our dedicated staff continues to make every effort to provide the learning opportunities that will enable all students achieve to their full potential. The key student achievement metrics of DIBELS and RISE assessments clearly indicate that we continue to make growth in our academic improvement goals.
Just a reminder that we will have an early dismissal, 10:35 am, on our final day of school, Thursday, May 30. We will be watching an end-of-year video on Thursday morning that has been prepared by third grade teacher Aubri Elder. Thank you Ms. Elder! I will send the video link to parents later this week.

I am pleased to announce that Lori Qian (pronounced Chen) will be our second grade Chinese Partner Teacher next year. Lori grew up in Chicago and has Masters in Applied Linguistics from the University of Illinois. She has taught third grade and middle school Language Arts at the American International School of Guangzhou in China for 10 years. Lori is married to a man from the Chinese province of Hubei, and she speaks Mandarin, an added bonus in our Chinese Immersion Program, even though she will be the English Partner teacher replacing Ms. Bennett.
And we are still waiting for some visa paperwork to clear with the State of Utah so we can hire Rui Chen as our third grade Chinese Immersion teacher. Rui recently completed her Master’s in Education at the University of Southern California and has had a student teaching experience in Chinese Immersion at a high school in California. Rui, her husband and two sons are anxious to move to Utah.

Eagles News 5/20/2019

I write the Eagle News from the heart of Manhattan, New York. Our son, Brady, will be graduating tomorrow from the NYU School of Dentistry and the commencement exercises will be held in Madison Square Garden. As a young boy, I dreamed of playing an NBA basketball game in MSG, but my basketball glory days ended in high school.  6th grade teacher Mr.  Roberts is the only person I know personally who has played in the The Garden, so a graduation ceremony will be my one and only trip to MSG. We have crammed a lot of NYC activities into our short stay here: a leisurely walk through Central Park, a Broadway play, the Carol King musical biopic Beautiful, which was incredible, Prince Street Pizza, chocolate chip cookies from Levain Bakery, church services in Manhattan, and all manner of head turning things in a city of 9 million people. We have food trucks in Utah Valley, and though there are plenty of those in NYC, I saw my first marijuana truck. I wonder what the reaction to the Weed World Candies truck would be if it pulled into the Alpine Days celebration? Though our trip has been fun, I look forward to returning to our little protected bubble in the Utah Valley!
I understand that we were able to get the Dance Festival in just before the skies opened up. Thank you rain gods and thank you Angee Tanner, our Movement Teacher, for all of the time and effort that went into preparing our students for their dance performances!
Our longest tenured instructor, kindergarten teacher Natalie Schurter, has accepted a job offer that has come to her to be the Reading Specialist at Westmore Elementary in Orem. We of course will miss Mrs. Schurter and are grateful for all she has done for Alpine Elementary and the many students she has taught for the past 18 years, but are excited that she now will get to share her knowledge of how to effectively teach reading to the kindergarten and first grade teachers at Westmore Elementary. That means we have a teaching change at every grade level next year. Wow!
Lizzy Snyder, a recent graduate of Utah State, will join Colleen Aitchison on our kindergarten team. We were originally going to have Ms. Snyder be the second grade Chinse Immersion English Partner Teacher, but she is very excited to move to kindergarten. A plan is in place to find a new second grade teacher. I am also waiting on the State of Utah to process some paperwork so we can hire Rui Chen to be our third grade Chinese Immersion teacher. Rui, a native of China, recently completed her Master’s Degree in Education at the University of Southern California. She did her student teaching in a high school Chinese Immersion Program.
The Box Tops contest for May is almost over. Let’s “Scoop Up Those Box tops”! The final day to turn in box tops is May 24. Thank you for helping our school raise over $1300.00 this year! The  ice cream prize has been generously donated by Stanley Adams Attorney at Law located in Salt Lake City. And a special thank you to parent volunteer and Box Tops Coordinator, Jesse Majors, for organizing all of our box top fundraising efforts this year.
The final day for kindergartners will be May 22 and the final day for preschoolers will be May 24.
Lots of end-of-the-year activities in the last eight days of school. Communicate with your student’s teacher if you have any questions. School will dismiss at 10:35 am on May 30, the final day of the school year.
